Geography and Climate

Voronezh Oblast is a region in southwestern Russia, located in the Central Federal District. It covers an area of 52,400 square kilometers (20,200 square miles) and has a population of over 2.3 million people. The oblast is bordered by Lipetsk Oblast to the north, Tambov Oblast to the east, Saratov Oblast to the southeast, Volgograd Oblast to the south, Rostov Oblast to the southwest, and Ukraine to the west.

The climate of Voronezh Oblast is temperate continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The average temperature in January is -10°C (14°F), while the average temperature in July is +20°C (68°F).

History

The territory of Voronezh Oblast has been inhabited since ancient times. The first settlements in the area were founded by the Scythians in the 7th century BC. In the 10th century AD, the area was conquered by the Khazars. In the 13th century, it was conquered by the Mongols and became part of the Golden Horde.

In the 15th century, the area was conquered by the Grand Duchy of Moscow. In 1585, the city of Voronezh was founded by Tsar Fyodor I. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Voronezh Oblast was a major center of shipbuilding for the Russian navy.

Economy

The economy of Voronezh Oblast is based on agriculture, industry, and services. The main agricultural products of the oblast are wheat, barley, sunflower seeds, and sugar beets. The main industries of the oblast are machinery, chemicals, and food processing.
