The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, dazzled observers in the Texas Panhandle and Amarillo on Friday, thanks to a powerful geomagnetic storm.
Photographer David Becker captured stunning images of the celestial display, which was visible as far south as Lubbock.
The aurora borealis is caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth's magnetic field. These particles create shimmering curtains of light in the sky, which can range in color from green to red to purple.
While the aurora borealis is typically only visible in high-latitude regions, geomagnetic storms can push the display further south. The storm that caused the recent sightings in Texas was one of the strongest in recent years.
