Atalanta Ends 61-Year Trophy Drought
Atalanta ended Bayer Leverkusen's 51-game unbeaten run and clinched their first major trophy in 61 years as Ademola Lookman scored a stunning hat-trick to win the Europa League on Wednesday.
Lookman's goals propelled Atalanta to a 3-2 victory over Leverkusen in the final, held in Budapest. The 26-year-old Nigerian forward put Atalanta ahead in the 17th minutes, doubled the lead in the 50th minutes, and completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minutes.
Leverkusen, who had not lost a competitive match since November 2022, fought back with goals from Patrick Schick and Moussa Diaby. However, Lookman's brilliance proved too much for the German side, who saw their hopes of an invincible treble dashed.
The Europa League title is Atalanta's second major trophy in their 117-year history, after winning the Coppa Italia in 1963.
