F1 Announces Changes to Sprint Qualifying Format for 2023

Six Sprint Races to Enhance Excitement and Competition

Formula 1 has unveiled plans to introduce two qualifying sessions for its sprint races in 2023, adding an extra layer of competition to the weekend format. The first qualifying session will still take place on Friday, determining the grid for the Saturday afternoon sprint race.

Format Changes for 2023

The revised format for F1 sprint weekends is as follows:

  • Friday: Two qualifying sessions (Q1 and Q2) to set the grid for the Saturday sprint race.
  • Saturday: Sprint race, with the top three finishers earning extra points.
  • Sunday: Traditional grand prix race, with the grid set by the results of the sprint race.

The sprint race distance will remain unchanged at 100km, with the top three finishers awarded points on a 10-8-6 scale.
